The Rutland City Police Department was proud to take part in the 2026 SkillsUSA Vermont Criminal Justice & Crime Scene Investigation competitions on April 8 🚔🕵️‍♂️

A huge THANK YOU to the Bennington County Sheriffs Department for hosting such an outstanding event! 🙌👏

Students from across Vermont put their skills to the test in realistic, hands-on scenarios from crime scene processing 🔍 to traffic stops 🚓 and did an incredible job 💪

We’re proud of all who competed, and wish the best of luck to those advancing to the SkillsUSA National Championships in Atlanta!

📸 Officer LaGuardia on location

Officer LaGuardia stopped by one of Rutland City’s historic buildings recently and snapped this photo a great way to connect with the history that makes our community special.

🚨🐰 RCPD WELCOMES OUR NEWEST OFFICER 🐰🚨

Please join us in welcoming Officer Cottontail to the force! After an extensive background check (and a very thorough carrot inventory audit), we’re happy to report he’s officially hopped on board just in time for Easter.

Officer Cottontail brings a unique approach to law enforcement:
🥚 Prefers handing out eggs instead of citations
🏃‍♂️ Undefeated in foot pursuits (seriously… no one’s outrunning him)
🚔 Patrol vehicle replaced with a high-speed hop unit
📋 Known to leave surprise “evidence” baskets on front lawns

We’ve also been advised that any suspicious activity involving missing chocolate or jelly beans should be reported immediately… though we may already know the culprit.

From all of us here at RCPD, we wish everyone a safe, happy, and egg-stra special Easter! 🌷🐣

Stay safe—and remember… you can run, but you can’t out-hop Officer Cottontail.

Strong community. Strong partnerships. 💪

Today we’re sharing a quick reel from the mats, featuring some of our officers putting in work alongside members of rutland_ajj. One of our own, who also serves as an efcombatives instructor, took the opportunity to roll, train, and exchange knowledge with the team.

Training like this builds more than skill it builds trust, respect, and real connections within our community. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn together and continue growing both on and off the job.

Stay safe, Rutland. 👮‍♂️

🚔✨ Better Late Than Never: Throwback Thursday Honoring Women in Law Enforcement ✨🚔

We may be a little late wrapping up Women’s History Month, but it’s never too late to recognize the incredible contributions women have made and continue to make in law enforcement.

Today’s throwback takes us back in time here in Rutland City, featuring one of our officers, a classic station wagon cruiser, and a loyal K9 partner 🐾

Things may have looked different back then, but the dedication to serving this community has always stayed the same. We’re proud of the women who helped pave the way and those who continue to wear the badge today at the Rutland City Police Department.

👀 Now let’s make it a challenge…

Do you know who the officer is? What is the year, make and model of the cruiser? And can you name the K9? Drop your guesses below! ⬇️

🚴‍♂️ SHIFTING GEARS: NEW PATROL UNITS ROLLING OUT 🚴‍♂️

Due to rising fuel costs, staffing shortages, and our commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Rutland City Police Department will be transitioning to a new patrol fleet effective immediately.

Please welcome our newest cruisers: 🚲🚲

Officers will now be responding to calls via Bike Patrol Units. These units are:
✅ Fuel efficient
✅ All-terrain capable
✅ Community friendly
✅ Won’t take up parking spaces

Residents are reminded:
• Do not attempt to “race the cruiser” while it is in service
• Please do not ask officers to pop wheelies during traffic stops
• Bike bells may be used in place of sirens (please yield accordingly)

We appreciate your patience during this transition as we pedal into the future.

Happy April Fools’ Day from your friends at RCPD! 😄

🚴‍♂️ On a serious note: Bike Patrol will be returning to the streets soon! Chief Prouty was already out on his bike yesterday, helping kick off the season and getting in some early patrol time. Keep an eye out for more officers on bikes as the weather warms up.

🔎 Dedicated Detectives Making a Difference 🚔

Outstanding job by our detectives and partner agencies after a complex, long-term investigation into a drug trafficking network connected to multiple overdose deaths in our region. Two defendants have now pleaded guilty in federal court a direct reflection of the persistence, professionalism, and commitment shown throughout this case.

This important work often happens behind the scenes, but the impact on community safety is significant. We remain proud of the efforts to disrupt dangerous drug activity and hold offenders accountable. 💙

Happy Retirement🎈🎉

Last week, a staple of Rutland County Law Enforcement for more than 40 years retired. Police Chief Ed Dumas of the Town of Rutland, Vermont previously served RCPD for more than 20 years before taking the lead of the Town Police Department. His impact on both the Rutland Town and Rutland City Police Departments will be felt for years to come.

During his career, Chief Dumas spent much of his time working at the Child First Advocacy Center and Rutland Unit for Special Investigations investigating child crimes and making sure perpetrators of the most vulnerable victims were brought to justice. We commend Chief Dumas on his extraordinary work in this field.

Chief Dumas was also known for having some of the best hairstyles 💇 throughout the decades. We picked some of our favorite Chief Dumas throwbacks 📸to showcase his mullet through the years.

On behalf of the Rutland City Police Department, we extend our deepest gratitude for your years of service and dedication to our community.

Congratulations on your retirement, Chief Dumas. We wish you all the best in this next chapter—you’ve certainly earned it. 🎉🎈
